A Homeschool Family Adventure in Tulsa, Oklahoma: History, Giants, Science & Route 66 Fun
When planning our Tulsa adventure, I knew I wanted a trip that mixed fun with learning opportunities…and Tulsa delivered in a big way. From giant roadside attractions and Route 66 nostalgia to hands-on science experiences and outdoor adventures, this city felt like one giant classroom disguised as a vacation.
Celebrating the Fourth of July at Tulsa FreedomFest
We planned our Tulsa trip around the Fourth of July so we could experience Folds of Honor FreedomFest, and it was such a fun addition to our adventure. The celebration along the Arkansas River had that perfect small-town holiday feeling with family activities, live entertainment, and an incredible fireworks display lighting up the Oklahoma sky. Of course, no Oklahoma summer celebration would be complete without a little weather drama! Right as the night was wrapping up, a massive storm rolled in Tulsa-style with powerful winds that had everyone scrambling. It was one of those unforgettable travel moments where Mother Nature decided to put on her own show. Between the fireworks, the music, and the unexpected storm finale, it made for a Fourth of July we definitely won’t forget.
Exploring the Gathering Place: Tulsa’s Ultimate Family Park

Our first stop was The Gathering Place, and it quickly became one of my son’s favorite parts of the trip. This incredible riverfront park is so much more than a playground…it’s a full day of adventure for kids of all ages.

He loved exploring the massive climbing structures, flying down the zip lines, and cooling off in the interactive water play areas. With the Oklahoma summer heat, we appreciated that the park offered places to slow down and cool off, too.

One of our favorite discoveries was the Cabinet of Wonder, located inside the ONEOK Boathouse. This air-conditioned space was the perfect break from the heat while still keeping the adventure going. Inside, we explored fascinating objects and exhibits that encouraged curiosity and imagination.

The park also offers canoe and pedal boat rentals at Peggy’s Pond, with beautiful views near the Arkansas River. It was simply too hot for us to get out on the water this trip, but it’s definitely on our list for our next visit!
For homeschool families, The Gathering Place is the perfect mix of physical activity, creativity, nature, and exploration.
Chasing Giants: Tulsa’s Route 66 Adventure

After seeing Tulsa’s famous Golden Driller, we decided to continue our giant-sized adventure through Tulsa’s Route 66 attractions.
We picked up a Route 66 passport and turned sightseeing into a fun scavenger hunt. We collected stamps while visiting some of Tulsa’s larger-than-life characters, including Buck Atom the Space Cowboy, Rosie the Riveter, and other Route 66 giants.

My son loved searching for each giant, taking photos, collecting stamps, and earning a prize at the end. We also enjoyed browsing the unique Route 66 shops and picking up souvenirs to remember our adventure.

It was such a fun way to bring history to life. Instead of just reading about Route 66, we were walking through it, meeting its characters, and experiencing the nostalgia firsthand.
A Night Out for the Grown-Ups
Of course, family trips need a little fun for the parents too! We spent a night at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa for some grown-up entertainment.

While we were there, we were lucky enough to receive complimentary tickets to see The Band Perry perform live. Getting to enjoy a free concert during our trip was such a fun surprise and added a little music and nightlife to our Oklahoma adventure.

Diving Into Science at the Oklahoma Aquarium

One of my favorite stops of the entire trip was the Oklahoma Aquarium in Jenks. This was easily one of the most hands-on and engaging aquarium experiences we’ve visited.

What stood out to me was how much there was to touch, explore, and learn. My son was able to interact with exhibits while discovering fascinating creatures. We saw incredible jellyfish, explored marine habitats, and even got the chance to touch stingrays.

The highlight was walking through the Shark Adventure tunnel, where sharks swim overhead and make you feel like you’re walking underneath the ocean. It was an unforgettable experience and the perfect homeschool lesson in marine biology, ecosystems, and animal adaptations.

Discovering Science Through Play at Discovery Lab

Another highlight of our trip was visiting Discovery Lab, Tulsa’s hands-on children’s museum located next to Gathering Place. This was the perfect place for my son to burn off energy while learning through play. He climbed through tunnels, experimented with interactive science exhibits, built creations, and explored activities focused on science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM). One of my favorite parts was watching him naturally connect with other kids as they worked together to solve challenges and discover how things worked. It never felt like a lesson, but that’s exactly what made it such a valuable homeschool experience. Discovery Lab does an incredible job of making science exciting, creative, and memorable for children of all ages. (Visit Tulsa)
What We’ll Do Next Time in Tulsa

There is still so much more of Tulsa we want to explore. We only got a small taste of the city’s Route 66 history, and next time we want to spend more time discovering the quirky roadside attractions and hidden gems along the Mother Road.
One stop already on our must-see list is the famous Blue Whale of Catoosa. This classic Route 66 landmark is a giant blue whale roadside attraction that has become one of the most recognizable symbols of the route.

Our Tulsa trip was the perfect blend of adventure, history, science, and family memories. It reminded me that some of the best homeschool lessons don’t happen at a desk—they happen while exploring new places, asking questions, and making memories together.
Until next time, Tulsa!
