There’s a certain kind of magic in mountain towns, where the air is just a little crisper, the coffee’s a little cozier, and you can stroll for hours without realizing how far you’ve wandered. Downtown Durango is exactly that kind of place, and it completely stole my heart.
Breakfast with Crêpes

We kicked off the morning in the most delicious way possible, crepes for breakfast at Michel’s Corner Crepes. This little French-inspired spot sits right on the corner of Main and College, with colorful flowers, a patio you can’t help but linger on, and the smell of warm batter drifting through the air. I went for the Nutella and banana crepe, and it was the perfect sweet start to a full day of exploring.
Downtown Shopping

From there, we set off on the best kind of treasure hunt: Vintage shopping. Main Avenue is lined with gorgeous brick buildings from the late 1800s, each one housing its own little world. The Durango Antique Market was my first stop, and I left grinning with a Bakelite belt buckle and a drilled turquoise beads that I already have big plans for.
Lunch at Animas Brewing Co.

After browsing the downtown shops, we stopped for lunch at Animas Brewing Company. Their laid-back patio was just the break we needed, and I couldn’t pass up the Hatch Chile Burger, spicy, savory, and even better with a cold Boxcar Red. It’s the kind of cozy local spot that makes you want to stay awhile by the river. Afterward, we took a short walk along the Animas River Trail and watched rafters drift past on the water.
Smiley Building

Midday called for a coffee pick-me-up , so we wandered into the Smiley Building a beautiful old school turned into a hub for coffee, local art, and community events. We grabbed coffee while exploring all the multi-level murals and artist studios. There’s something special about sipping a latte while surrounded by the hum of creativity.
Detours for Thrift Stores!

On our way toward dinner, we made two essential thrift stops. First was the La Plata County Humane Society Thrift Store, where I scored some beautiful vintage fabric that immediately sparked sewing project ideas. Then came Nomad Vintage, a perfectly curated collection of retro clothing and bohemian home goods. The textures, colors, and styling were pure inspiration for future projects.
Dinner at Ska Brewing

By late afternoon, we were ready to sit down and relax, so we headed to Ska Brewing for an early dinner. This place has such a fun, laid-back vibe, colorful murals, a big sunny patio, and the hum of locals unwinding after work. Ska is known for its craft beers & I love their Pinstripe red ale!
Downtown Durango is the perfect mix of old and new, rugged and refined—just how I like my travels. You can start your morning in France (well… almost) with crepes and coffee, spend the day digging through antiques and enjoying local art, thrift your way to unexpected treasures, and end it all with craft beer and comfort food as the sun sets.
