Hot Springs, Arkansas
If you’re looking for a homeschool field trip that’s part science class, part history lesson, and a whole lot of fun, the Arkansas Alligator Farm & Petting Zoo in Hot Springs checks every box.

This family-run spot has been around since 1902, making it one of the oldest attractions in the area. These days, the alligators are here for education only, not for hides or food, and the staff does an amazing job helping kids safely learn about these fascinating reptiles.
🐐 Petting Zoo Favorites

Before we even made it to the gators, my son was totally captivated by the petting zoo area. He got to pet friendly goats, visit the tortoises (who seemed to enjoy all the attention), and even feed a few of the animals. It’s the perfect way for younger kids to warm up before meeting the alligators, and a great lesson in animal care and respect.
🐊 The Alligator Experience

Once we got to the main attraction, he had the chance to hold and feed a baby alligator, carefully supervised by the staff, of course! It was one of those moments where learning really came alive. We talked about how alligators grow, what they eat, and why conservation is so important. The farm is home to all sizes of gators, from babies to full-grown adults lounging in the sun.
The team there is passionate about teaching, and you can tell they really care about sharing Arkansas’ natural wildlife with families.
⚾ A Surprising Slice of Baseball History

Here’s something most visitors don’t know: this same spot is tied to baseball legend Babe Ruth! Back in 1918, Ruth was in Hot Springs for spring training. During a game across the street at old Whittington Park, he hit a massive home run, so big that the ball flew over the street and landed inside the Alligator Farm!
That hit was later estimated at 573 feet, and it’s often said to be the moment Ruth went from pitcher to home-run hero. Today, there’s a historic marker across from the farm as part of the Hot Springs Baseball Trail, which celebrates the city’s role as the birthplace of baseball spring training.
